Anyone who is a big kicks fan is going to be excited to know more about the Air Jordan 1 sneaker.

This shoe is not just comfortable and cool, it's also become something that is now an iconic fashion statement.

But how did a simple sneaker become such a big deal?

And what makes the Air Jordan 1 still stand out above so many other shoes, even after all these years?

The Start of the Air Jordan 1

It was 1985 and Michael Jordan had just hit the NBA as one of the most promising new athletes on the court.

Nike had approached the young basketball star during his rookie year, while he was playing for Chicago Bulls.

They wanted to make a sneaker with his name on them and create a whole new brand that Jordan would be proud to wear and represent.

At first, MJ wasn't so sure. His career had just begun, and he was trying to be very particular about what sorts of deals he wanted to sign on to and how he wanted his persona to be represented.

But Nike was persistent and made it clear what they would be able to do for him with their planned branding for the Air Jordan sneakers.

They offered Jordan $500,000 a year if he would endorse and play in the Air Jordan 1 sneakers, an offer that was completely unprecedented at that time and was more than double what any other basketball player was receiving at the time from a company or advertiser.

Peter Moore, a creator at Nike, designed the first Air Jordan 1. Together, he and Jordan began to come up with the concept behind the new sneaker.

At first, Michael Jordan wasn't as excited about a shoe that Peter Moore made for him.

The sole was too thick, and he felt the black and red colorway made him look a bit ridiculous.

Not only that, but the NBA threatened to fine Jordan for wearing the shoe, stating that the black and red colorway on those first Air Jordan 1 sneakers was not sanctioned for wear by the league.

Eventually, the shoes grew on Jordan, and the Air Jordan 1 became his trademark footwear for the almost two decades his feet flew down basketball courts, impressing and amazing thousands of people who came to watch him play.

The Air Jordan 1 Today

Now, more than thirty years after Peter Moore designed the Air Jordan 1 sneaker, these shoes continue to sell out of stores and on websites worldwide.

Even though the famed face behind this Nike shoe has long since retired from playing for the NBA, people everywhere are still scooping them up, sending the message that the Nike Air Jordan 1 is a classic that isn't going to be replaced anytime soon.

And whether it's the Air Jordan 1 low, the Air Jordan 1 mid, or the Air Jordan 1 high, there is bound to be an Air Jordan for each person's style, taste, and needs.

One of the reasons these kicks continue to be so popular has a lot to do with Nike's ability to continue to create something new each season, yet still offer the classic comfort we've grown to love and expect.

Take, for instance, the Air Jordan 1 Retro High University Blue.

Made from the high-quality leather that Nike is now known for, this Air Jordan 1 is a quiet classic with a white base and powder blue overlay, giving a nod to the University of North Carolina, the school that started the impressive career that MJ has had.

With a black swoosh and the Air Jordan logo, this sneaker gives its wearer an understated look that doesn't have to be too flashy while still being incredibly cool.

This is the style that the Air Jordan shoes are known for...classic, cool, and incredibly comfortable to wear. You can also find the same style as the Air Jordan 1 Low UNC which offers a brighter look, swapping out the classic black Nike swoosh for UNC blue.
